Paint it, Blue

Paint it, Blue is a one-to-one performance in which the artist’s naked body becomes a surface for collective painting. The audience can choose to approach, paint, observe or remain at a distance. The work explores vulnerability, participation and the act of looking through a blue-and-white visual landscape.

Paint it, Blue draws on questions of bodily exposure, spectatorship and participation in performance art. The work is informed by Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece, particularly its invitation to the audience to act in relation to a body placed before them. It also resonates with Franko B’s use of vulnerability and presence, and with his attention to the intimacy that can emerge in encounters between a body and its viewers.

Yves Klein’s Anthropometries form another visual and conceptual reference. In these works, women’s bodies were used as living brushes to produce blue traces on a surface. Paint it, Blue shifts this image: instead of treating the body only as an instrument of painting, it places my body at the centre of a participatory situation in which looking, proximity and painting unfold between myself and the audience.

The blue-and-white palette refers both to Klein’s monochrome blue and to the colors of the Greek flag. It brings together associations with painting, the female nude, national imagery and the ways bodies are seen, framed and made visible.
